Which Eco Drinkware Material is Right for Your Brand?

Bamboo, recycled steel, wheat fibre, glass – the options can feel endless. Here’s how to cut through the noise and choose the right sustainable material for your branded drinkware.

Sustainable merch has moved from nice-to-have to non-negotiable for a huge number of businesses. Whether you’re putting together a staff welcome kit, planning your next event giveaway or sourcing premium client gifts, the pressure to make greener choices is real, and so is the confusion.

Walk into any branded merch conversation and you’ll quickly encounter a wall of materials, certifications and eco-claims. Bamboo. rPET. BPA-free. Compostable. Recycled content. It all sounds good. But what does it actually mean, and which option is genuinely right for your brand?

This guide breaks down every major eco drinkware material in plain English – what it is, how sustainable it really is, and which type of brand or brief it suits best. By the end, you’ll know exactly what to ask for.

Why Material Choice Matters More Than You Think

Before we get into the materials themselves, it’s worth understanding why this decision carries more weight than simply picking the option that sounds the greenest.

Durability is the most underrated sustainability factor. A stainless steel bottle that someone uses every day for five years has an enormous environmental advantage over a “biodegradable” cup that gets used twice and ends up in general waste. Longevity is sustainability!

Not all eco claims mean the same thing. Recyclable means a product can be recycled, not that it will be. Biodegradable means it breaks down eventually, but the timescale and conditions required vary wildly. Recycled content means the product was made using previously used materials. These are very different things, and conflating them is where greenwashing tends to creep in.

Material affects everything downstream. Your choice of material will influence which branding methods are available, how the finished product looks and feels, your unit cost, your minimum order quantity, and ultimately how your recipients perceive the gift. It’s a decision worth getting right.

With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of every major material you’re likely to encounter.

The Materials: A Practical Breakdown

🔩 Recycled Stainless Steel

Recycled stainless steel is the gold standard of eco drinkware right now, and for good reason. It’s made using a significant proportion of post-consumer scrap metal, it’s built to last for years of daily use, and it’s fully recyclable again at end of life. In terms of lifecycle impact, very few materials compete.

From a branding perspective, it’s also one of the most versatile options available. Laser engraving gives a clean, premium finish that never fades or peels. Screen printing and pad printing work well for full-colour logos. Powder coating allows for custom colours that can be matched to your brand palette.

Double-walled recycled steel bottles and travel mugs offer excellent temperature retention – keeping drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12.

Best for: Corporate gifting, executive welcome kits, premium client gifts, tech companies, active or outdoor-facing audiences.

Worth knowing: The unit cost is higher than plastic alternatives. For large-volume event giveaways on a tight budget, another material may be more practical, but for anything where quality and longevity matter, recycled steel is hard to beat.

🎋 Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth, requires no pesticides and needs very little water. As a raw material, its production credentials are genuinely impressive. In the branded drinkware world, it’s most commonly used for mug bodies, lids, and travel cup sleeves rather than full water bottles.

The aesthetic is warm, natural and artisan, which makes it a particularly strong fit for wellness brands, independent coffee businesses, ethical companies and anyone whose brand identity leans into craft or natural values. Branding is usually applied via laser engraving, which gives a beautiful, tactile result.

Best for: Wellness brands, ethical businesses, coffee shops, boutique hospitality, smaller gifting occasions where the aesthetic story matters as much as the product.

Worth knowing: Pure bamboo and bamboo composite are not the same thing. Some bamboo products are made with melamine or other binders – always check the spec. Bamboo also isn’t suitable for hot liquids in all forms, so confirm with your supplier that the product you’re ordering is rated for the use case you have in mind.

🌾 Wheat Fibre and Rice Husk

These materials are made from agricultural by-products: the leftover husks and fibres from food production that would otherwise go to waste. They require no additional land or resources to produce, which gives them a genuinely low-impact origin story.

In practice, wheat fibre and rice husk products tend to be lightweight, affordable and available from lower minimum order quantities, making them a popular choice for high-volume event giveaways and campaigns where budget is a primary consideration.

Best for: Large-volume campaigns, conference and trade show giveaways, entry-level eco gifting, briefs where budget is tight but sustainability messaging still matters.

Worth knowing: This is an area where greenwashing risk is real. Some wheat fibre products still contain a significant proportion of plastic.

♻️ Recycled Plastic (rPET)

rPET is made from post-consumer plastic bottles; typically the kind collected through household recycling. It uses significantly less energy to produce than new plastic, diverts waste from landfill, and results in a lightweight, durable product.

It’s a particularly strong choice for outdoor events, sports clubs and active audiences where weight and resilience matter. It also tends to sit at an accessible price point, making it viable for medium-to-large volume runs.

Best for: Sports teams, outdoor events, schools and universities, active lifestyle brands, campaigns where lightweight carry-ability matters.

Worth knowing: rPET is still plastic at end of life, and plastic can only be recycled a limited number of times before degrading. It’s a better option than new plastic, but it’s not the same as a truly circular material like steel or glass. For brands with ambitious sustainability targets, it’s worth being clear about this in your communications.

🔵 Borosilicate Glass

Borosilicate glass is chemical-free, completely inert (meaning it won’t leach anything into your drink), fully recyclable and arguably the cleanest-looking material in any drinkware collection. It doesn’t retain flavours or odours and gives a premium, transparent finish that works beautifully for desk gifting.

For brands in health, wellness, food and drink, or any sector where cleanliness and transparency are part of the brand story, glass carries a lot of weight.

Best for: Office and desk gifting, wellness and nutrition brands, food and drink businesses, premium client gifts where the product will live on a desk or kitchen counter.

Worth knowing: Glass is fragile and heavier than other materials, which limits its suitability for outdoor use, commuting or active lifestyles. It’s a product designed to be used in one place, and for the right brief, that’s absolutely fine.

🌽 Compostable / PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is derived from plant starch (typically corn) and is designed to be industrially composted at end of life. It’s increasingly used in cups, lids and accessories as a single-use plastic replacement.

The sustainability story here is genuinely appealing, but it comes with an important caveat: PLA requires industrial composting facilities to break down properly. It will not biodegrade in a home compost bin, and in landfill it behaves much like conventional plastic. Without the infrastructure to dispose of it correctly, the eco benefit largely disappears.

Best for: Events where composting infrastructure is in place, catering and hospitality settings with controlled waste streams, single-use replacement scenarios where the disposal route is managed.

Worth knowing: If you’re using PLA products as branded giveaways at a general event or conference, think carefully about whether your audience will actually be able to compost them. If not, the sustainability claim becomes complicated.

🪨 Recycled Aluminium

Aluminium is one of the most recyclable materials on earth – it can be recycled infinitely without any loss of quality. Recycled aluminium uses around 95% less energy to produce than new aluminium, making it one of the most carbon-efficient materials available at scale.

As a drinkware material it’s lightweight, robust and available at good price points for medium-to-large volume runs. It’s a popular choice for outdoor and festivals, sports brands and campaigns where weight is a consideration.

Best for: Outdoor brands, festival and event merch, sports teams, campaigns where lightweight carry-ability and genuine recyclability both matter.

Worth knowing: Most aluminium bottles require a liner coating on the inside. Always confirm with your supplier that this liner is BPA-free, as older liner formulations can contain chemicals you don’t want near food and drink.

Quick-Match Guide: Which Material Fits Your Brief?

Maximum durability, premium corporate feel Recycled stainless steel
Warm, natural, artisan aesthetic Bamboo
Large volume on a budget, still eco Wheat fibre / rPET

The Bottom Line

There’s no single “most sustainable” drinkware material. The right choice depends on who your audience is, how they’ll use the product, where you want to sit on the quality-to-volume spectrum, and what your brand values are trying to communicate.

What we’d always encourage is this: prioritise durability over eco-labelling. A product that’s genuinely used, genuinely loved and genuinely kept for years will always outperform a technically-compostable alternative that ends up in the wrong bin.
